UKTS Students Get behind X Factor’s Rikki Loney

UKTheatreSchool students were delighted that X Factor finalist and former UKTS Musical Theatre Masterclass student Rikki Loney got to the live shows but they were disappointed he was sent home but nevertheless they applauded his dedication.

Principal Lizanne Thomson commented 'The students absolutely love X Factor and they had all been texting and phoning like crazy to vote for Rikki. It creates a brilliant buzz within the theatre school and is fantastic for Scotland'.  She added ‘I thought after all the craziness when Nakitta Angus (who was also a former Musical Theatre Masterclass student) was in a similar position was great and the students at the school were disappointed when she went out in the sixth live show but they were delighted she did so well and they also believed when I say ‘you can be and do anything you put your mind to…anything is possible’.

Lizanne wants every talented student to believe in themselves and their ability and ‘never give up’. ‘It maybe hard work but the rewards can be tremendous and so satisfying if a young person has fire in their belly and follows their ambitions they will not fall far short of their goals’. She adds ‘Look at Rikki, he wants it really bad and has taken knocks but has got right back up and got on with it and I am sure he will do exactly that again. I urged all our existing 750 students and any former students too; to get right behind Rikki because they all know how hard it must be for this young boy – they know he was once in their shoes’.

Lizanne does however promote preparation and gaining qualifications as part of the journey to being a performer, ‘It is important to have great training behind you along with working your way up the ladder to ensure longevity in performing arts because it can be a very tough business. I appreciate the young people would love to get involved in shows like X Factor. They see that shows like this can propel them into industry at a rapid rate but sustaining their position in that same industry is almost impossible without the correct training or ongoing positive backing’.

As well as courses covering all the performing aspects of theatre UKTheatreSchool also have a POPular Music Course dedicated to young people wishing to get in to pop music as a performer. The principal said ‘We get so many students wanting to train as a pop singer so we have looked at the Popular Music full time courses developed for the SQA and introduced a bespoke part-time course in Popular Music from a performer’s perspective’.

To sing as a pop singer is a singing technique that, after training, can be applied when required. UKTheatreSchool advise any students doing this course should also look to do added Jazz and other dance classes as well as one-on-one singing lessons working on pop and other repertoire to allow for a more versatile singer.
